For all those who own a Canon DSLR, there’s a custom firmware called Magic Lantern for selected Canon DSLR types. Started out as having functions tailored for videographers, the newer versions of Magic Lantern also has features useful for photographers. It’s an addon/plugin for your camera’s firmware and is installed in the memory card. It’s a simple install, and uninstalling only takes formatting the memory card.
Magic Lantern works in several Canon DSLR types which are the 550D, 60D, 600D, 50D, and 5D Mark II. Support for the 5D Mark III and the 650D is forthcoming. For more details and info on updates, check out the full release notes on Magic Lantern’s site.
What is it that Magic Lanter do? This addon adds features to your DSLR, some of which are:
1.Intervalometer. Very useful for timelapse fans.
2.Manual video exposure for the 500D, for those who aren’t happy with its auto exposure settings.
3.Video Mode for the 50D that doesn’t have a video mode at default.
4.Motion Detection. When activated, it instructs your camera to shoot when there is motion in from of the lens.

You can download the firmware file for free (though they do accept donations) via Magic Lantern’s Download site. The download file is bundled with a detailed instruction on how to install.
